It’s the last day of September and I’m sitting here catching up on TheTrooper97 videos and reflecting a little about the past month. Can’t say I’m sorry to see it go. It’s been brutally hot and humid this summer in Virginia and I’m ready for the cooler months of fall.
Not that September was a bad month for me. I had a very successful Atlantic City trip that most of you are probably familiar with from the trip reports (if not, check them out here). The trip was an experiment to see if I could cover expenses and still make a profit playing $1/$2, and in that respect it was very successful. I’m looking forward to taking another trip in October and hoping I can repeat or improve upon that success.
I began focusing closely on habits this month and it ended up being a mixed bag of success and failure, with a little bit of mediocrity thrown in for good measure. I felt pretty satisfied with my meditation practice. Even though I didn’t meditate twice a day as often as I would have liked, I did meditate at least once every day and that daily consistency is the most important thing to me.
My diet was hit and miss this month. I did lose 5 lbs. for September. That’s not exactly crushing my weight loss goals, and though it’s a good start, there’s plenty of room for improvement next month.
Poker study was good and bad as well. I studied every day in some capacity. Unfortunately, it wasn’t always very deliberate or effective. In fact, it was often pretty passive. And in study, just like in poker, passive is just about the worst strategy you can have.
Another poker area in which I need to improve is volume. Though I got in a lot of hours in AC, I didn’t put in nearly enough hours at my home casino, at least not if I want to reach the bankroll goals I’ve set for myself. So for October the goal will be 55 hours of playing time for the month. That will mean putting in two, four-hour sessions per week at my home casino, and 30 hours during my AC trip. It’s very doable, but will be depend on me keeping myself motivated to do all the driving. If I lived within an hour of a casino, I could put in those hours no problem. But I don’t, so the big issue is always getting my ass in the car and actually making the drive.
Many of you read about my plans for a hand reading “ultralearning project” (read all about it here). I’m still excited about moving forward with the project, but after talking about it extensively with Dr. Cardner, I’ve decided to revisit the construction of the project in the hopes of making it a much more effective and focused plan. A big part of the success of these types of intensive learning projects is spending enough time and effort to create a sound plan for tackling the subject matter. After talking with Dr. Cardner, I don’t feel like the current plan is quite where it needs to be for maximum effectiveness. So we’re working together to create better plan of attack and I will keep you updated on the details in upcoming posts.
The big success for September was this blog. This was the first full month and it far exceeded my expectations. I’m already well over 2,000 page views and the blog seems to be steadily growing a following. I’ve got some cool stuff coming up in October, starting tomorrow with an interview I did with Dr. Cardner, as well as my first giveaway/drawing for subscribers, so I’m hoping to see even more growth as we move toward 2017. This blog wouldn’t even exist without the support of my amazing wife, Patti, or the many coaches, friends, family members, and readers who have been incredibly encouraging and supportive since day one. So thank you all.

Here’s to crushing October!
